Abby Lakew excels in both modern and traditional Ethiopian music. Her first album goes to show that it indeed is possible to satisfy modern music fans while still keeping with ones roots. Abby Lakew is an Ethiopian-American currently residing in the Huston area. Abby has performed at multiple events since her album, and is currently working on a second one. The songs featured on this website are from her first album. Abby was born and spent her early childhood in Gondar, Ethiopia. She acquired much of the Ethiopian diaspora attention through her first concert, that helped launch her music career to a wider audience. She moved to the USA at the age of 13, and she says singing in both Amharic and English reflects the two different world she grew up in.

Music of Ethiopia
Music often forms part of many human activities and it helps to strengthen, shape and channel religious, political, social, cultural, economic and linguistic behaviour (Merriam, 1964). The same is true of Ethiopian music, which is as varied as the cultural heritages found in the country. All the Ethiopian tribes have their own distinct sounds that identify them from their neighbours, with each tribe having its unique dance patterns. The traditional music performances are usually accompanied by dances. In spite of the differences, tribes from one region tend to use the same musical instruments. Ethiopian music borrows significantly from the Orthodox Church in the country and uses lots of drums, solo rattles and hand-clapping. It is not as rhythmic as music from other parts of Africa but uses more reed- and string-based instruments. However, Islam also had its influence and resulted in the manzuma musical style. The azmari is a secular musical style developed in the highlands. Popular music got into the Ethiopian scene in the 1930s following the development of Western-style military brass bands by Emperor Haile Selassie I. Rastafarians regard him highly and believe he will lead them to eternal peace. Rastafari was coined from his pre-imperial name, Ras (Duke) Tafari Makonnen.
